House Fire 4-19-06

On April 19, 2006 at about 10:30 pm, West Milford Fire Companies 5, 3 and 6 were dispatched to a house on fire on Castle Rock Rd. in the Upper Greenwood Lake section of West Milford Township. The home was under construction and there was no one living there at the time of the fire.

Jim Gage (Battalion 5) was the first officer on scene and reported a working fire. Command requested a second alarm, a Tanker from Company 4 and a Tanker From the Highland Lakes Fire Department in Vernon. Company 5 Chief Pete McGuinness assumed command and also requested a Tanker from Warwick N.Y. Engine 3 set up a draft site at the dam area of Upper Greenwood Lake on Lakeshore Dr. and a hose lay was established to the scene which was about six tenths of a mile away.

Crews from Engine 5 went to work on the fire while Tanker 5 tied into Engine 5. Their tank water was quickly exhausted before the hose lay was established and in coming Tanker 4 and the Tanker from Highland Lakes responded right into the fire scene to supply Tanker 5.

It took firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control. Also assisting during the incident as fill in's at empty fire stations was an engine from Ringwood to station 3, a tanker from company 1 to station 4 and a tanker from company 2 to station 6.

There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation by West Milford Fire Marshal Mike Woch and the West Milford Police Department.
